Banff Upper Hot Springs

Hot Spring

While technically in Alberta, Banff Upper Hot Springs is easily accessed and well developed.

The Banff Upper Hot Springs, being a well developed and long standing location in Banff Alberta, just east of the Alberta BC border along Hwy 1, is considered a tradition, nay a staple, in the lives of those living nearby, as well by visitors from around the world. In the winter, one can enjoy this relaxing pool, feeling the full blast of the brisk air on the coldest days, staved off by the mystical steam rising from the temperature regulated water. During these cold days, it is not uncommon to see visitors participating in hair sculpting, using the contrast of hot water and cold hair to sculpt funky, whimsical, and sometimes ridiculous hairstyles, and hear the eruption of giggles and laughter as each new person perfects their hair, only to resubmerge themselves and allow the ice covered structure to dissolve and start again.

The facility, which includes a gift shop, access to historical information about the area, and pamphlets for every interesting thing to do in Banff, is structured just so that one's feet enter the water before they have even left the building, and it truly is invigorating to feel that cold air grip you tight before submerging in the hot water. It was built as a way of monetizing the popularity of the hot springs, however, it was discovered that the natural hot springs in banff are the sole home to a particular species of snails that was discovered to be living amongst the high heat and mineral content. Because of this species, travel to the natural hot springs is not recommended as a person's soaps and chemicals on their bodies, as well as the natural agitation of walking in the hot spring, could wipe out the entire species.

The Springs are open from 10:00-10:00 every day. Adult entry is $16.50, youth and seniors are $14.25, and children under 3 are free.
