Frizzell Hotsprings

Frizzell Hot Springs is located on the south side of the Skeena River, directly across from Highway 16 east of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The only access to the springs is by boat, and only at high tide, making it a difficult location to reach. The Skeena River can be quite rough, especially in the late afternoon when tides, winds, and currents can all work against each other. Therefore, this approach is only recommended for experienced boaters.

The springs are situated on privately owned Lot 6449, approximately 2 km (1.2 mi.) northeast of Hotspring Point. Visitors must keep their eyes peeled for a bit of clearing that holds the remains of an ancient bathhouse, as the springs are not easily visible from the water. The springs are about 30 m (100 ft.) above the high-tide line, nestled in a little gully just west of a small creek.

Once visitors reach the springs, they will be treated to a unique experience. The hot water bubbles up from three closely spaced vents, with temperatures ranging from 38°C to 46°C (100°F to 115°F). The water forms a small stream that runs down to the mud flats of the Skeena River. There is only one small soaking pool, with water that is odorless and slightly gassy. The water has a low content of dissolved minerals, mainly sulphate and calcium.

Frizzell Hot Springs has a rich history, dating back to the early 20th century. In the early years of this century, Port Essington, a cannery town at the junction of the Skeena and Ecstall rivers, was a thriving hub. The hot springs, located just 8 km (5 mi.) upriver, were popular with the Japanese fishermen who made up a large proportion of the population of Port Essington. In the 1920s, the springs were purchased by George Frizzell, a prominent butcher and businessman in Port Essington and Prince Rupert. Frizzell built a bathhouse and planned further development, but Port Essington was already in decline. By 1930, the bathhouse was abandoned, and since then, only casual use has been made of the springs.

It is important to note that the springs are privately owned, and visiting without owner permission is considered an actionable trespass. Despite the challenges associated with reaching the location, Frizzell Hot Springs remains a beautiful and unique destination for experienced boaters seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.
