Mess Creek Hot Springs

Hot Spring

Undeveloped natural thermal springs in the Mt. Edziza region.

Mess Creek Hot Springs, found in the Mt. Edziza area, are natural thermal springs that remain undeveloped. They have a temperature of approximately 42.5°C (108.5°F).

Situated on the western side of Mess Creek, these hot springs are about 7 km (4 mi.) south of Mess Lake at UTM grid 850620, with the area covered by NTS map 104G/7. The springs consist of two vents positioned at the base of a small limestone cliff near a swampy region, roughly 50 m (160 ft.) away from the creek's bank.

The hot spring water forms a pool, measuring about 20 m by 10 m (65 ft. by 30 ft.) in size and approximately one meter deep. The water's dissolved mineral content is relatively high, predominantly composed of bicarbonate, chloride, sodium, sulphate, and calcium. Notably, tufa is actively replacing the moss along one side of the pool, indicating a continuous process of mineral deposition.

The water emanates a distinct sulphur smell, and the presence of algae tends to accumulate in the pond, likely due to the warm and mineral-rich conditions provided by the hot springs.
