Middle Springs

Hot Spring

As the most popular home to the Banff Spring Snail, the Middle Springs are no longer accessible to the public to preserve the site and snails.

These natural wonders, marked on tourist maps, are no longer accessible to the public. In the past, visitors could access the springs via a short trail from Mountain Avenue, located just beyond Glacier Drive. The main spring flows from a low cave tucked beneath a horseshoe-shaped tufa cliff. Additionally, a cooler spring can be found outside the cave. Inside the cave, visitors can observe a warm pool that bubbles with gas and water.

The Middle Springs maintain a cooler temperature than other Banff springs, with the water reaching a maximum temperature of around 35°C (95°F). The water has a distinct sulphuric odor and mineral taste. Visitors can also appreciate the lush vegetation surrounding the little warm stream that flows over a flat tufa bench. The algae and bacteria growth here is a sight to behold, with shades of white and green dominating the scenery.
