Nahanni Headwater Hot Springs

Hot Spring

A remote spring and the hottest known in the Northwest Territories.

In a remote area of the Little Nahanni River map region (105I) in the Northwest Territories, there exists a collection of rarely visited springs. These springs are notable for being the hottest in the region. Located at approximately 62°49'N and 128°50'W, they emerge from steep boulder slopes at an elevation of about 1370 m (4500 ft.), high above the creek below. Their location is such that they can be seen from the air. There are three main springs in this area: two primary springs spaced around 20 m (65 ft.) apart, and another source positioned approximately 400 m (1300 ft.) further south.

The water from these springs reaches a maximum temperature of 64°C (147°F) and contains only a minimal amount of dissolved minerals. There is a subtle sulfuric scent to the water. Additionally, you can observe varicolored algae thriving in the outflow streams of these springs. Due to their remote location, these natural wonders remain relatively untouched and unexplored.
