Olympic Hot Springs

Hot Spring

A group of natural geothermal pools located in Olympic National Park in Washington State, known for unique rock formations and clothing-optional status.

Olympic Hot Springs offer a unique and unforgettable experience for hikers and hot spring enthusiasts. Although the hot springs are a popular destination for visitors from all over the world, there are several interesting stops along the way that make the journey just as rewarding.

Starting from the Boulder Creek Trailhead, the 2.5-mile hike to the hot springs is relatively flat and suitable for hikers of all levels. Along the way, hikers can take a 0.1-mile detour to the beautiful Madison Creek Falls, enjoy a picnic stop along the Elwha River, and marvel at the site of the former dam at Glines Canyon.

The hot springs themselves are a series of natural hot pools fed by underground geothermal sources, which heat the water to a comfortable temperature for soaking. The seven pools are located in a secluded valley, accessible only by hiking trails, which adds to the unique and peaceful atmosphere of the area.

It's important to note that these hot springs are not monitored or maintained by the National Park Service and may contain high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. Visitors should use these pools at their own risk and test the temperature before entering, as some pools can be as hot as 118 degrees. Additionally, backpackers must follow wilderness camping regulations and acquire a wilderness use permit.

The Olympic Hot Springs are only accessible by foot, and no pets or bicycles are permitted. Currently, the Elwha area is closed to vehicle traffic beyond the Madison Falls parking lot due to extensive flood damage and road washout. Parking and turnaround space are limited, and a bypass trail provides access around the flood damage. Visitors should check road status and trail conditions before visiting.
