Prophet River Hot Springs

Hot Spring

15 hot spring pools along Prophet River, also known as Heritage River, remote and difficult to access via horse, hike, or helicopter.

Prophet River Hotsprings Provincial Park is a wilderness park established on June 29, 1999, that protects locally significant hot springs. The park is situated along the shores of the Prophet River, surrounded by the Eastern Muskwa Ranges. Visitors can access the park by hiking, horse, or helicopter, and will be rewarded with scenic vistas and wildlife viewing opportunities. The park's primary role is to protect the sensitive hot springs habitats and the diverse wildlife associated with those habitats. The area has cultural significance to the Prophet River First Nations.

The Prophet River, which is provincially designated as a Heritage River, runs adjacent to the park. There are about 15 hot spring pools in the park, some large enough to hold five people, with hot water and a strong sulfur smell. The tufa mound created by mineral deposits from the springs is surrounded by stands of black spruce, which thin out to the alpine of the surrounding mountains. There is an ancient burial ground on a hill near the springs. Visitors should note that the hot spring is shallow and only about a foot deep, in bedrock. Despite the remote and difficult-to-access location, it is worth stopping by. Large mammals, such as Stone's sheep, moose, caribou, elk, mountain goat, grizzly bear, black bear, and wolves, utilize the area.
