Roch-qui-trempe-à-l'eau Warm Springs

Hot Spring

A series of warm springs along the Mackenzie River near Wrigley, north of Fort Simpson.

Many small warm springs stretch along the Mackenzie River's east bank not far from the small village of Wrigley. You could boat down the Mackenzie itself to reach Wrigley if you desire, or simply follow the Mackenzie Highway north from Fort Simpson. There are relatively few springs in the Northwest Territories accessible by car and Roche-qui-trempe-à-l'eau is one of them.

Around 3.5km north of Wrigley you will come across a distinctive hill, the titular Roche-qui-trempe-à-l'eau, where the warm springs can be found running along its base. Should you get lost or could simply use some olfactory assistance, a fairly strong sulphur odour might help you pinpoint the springs if you follow your nose. Once there, you will find 21-31C waters emerging from bedrock fissures roaming across a distance of nearly 400m, with the most significant flow peeks its way down a talus slope close to the Mackenzie River's waterline, finally collecting itself enough to produce a minor creek slightly north of the main rock outcropping.

For the scientifically-minded or simply the numbers-curious, these spring waters boast roughly 12,000 parts-per-million of dissolved solids, mainly sulphate, chloride, and sodium.
