Sol Duc Hot Springs

Hot Spring

An elusive hot spring reportedly located north of Darrington, Washington.

The Sulphur Hot Springs, with a temperature ranging from 27°C to 37°C (81°F to 99°F), are located around the 1920-foot contour on both the USGS Downey Mountain map and the Green Trails Cascade Pass map. According to different sources, they are either 1.8 miles (2.9 km) or 0.75 miles (1.2 km) up the trail. The flow rate is reported as a "seep" in one account and 4 to 8 liters per minute in another, indicating the presence of more than one spring in the area.

To access these springs, one must turn east onto the Suiattle River road (No. 26) from Highway 530, approximately 12 km (7.5 mi.) north of Darrington and 19 km (12 mi.) south of Concrete. After driving 35 km (22 mi.) along this excellent road, you'll reach the Sulphur Creek campground, just past the 22-mile sign. The Sulphur Creek trail (No. 793) begins about 100 m (330 ft.) back along the main road. The trail ascends steeply before descending into Sulphur Creek.

An unmistakable sulfur smell fills the air around the creek, but despite the efforts of many visitors, the exact location of the springs remains elusive. Some have reported difficulty in finding them even with the help of the notice board in the campground. For better chances of discovering the springs, it's recommended to visit during late fall when Sulphur Creek's water level is lower, and be prepared for challenging and bushy terrain.
