Vermillion Lakes Cool Springs

Hot Spring

The springs on the shore of Third Vermilion Lake are a unique and fascinating sight, despite being too small and cool for swimming.

Located adjacent to the road and nestled on the shore of Third Vermilion Lake lies a quaint set of springs that are certain to pique the curiosity of any passerby. While too small and cool to take a dip in, these springs are a fascinating sight to behold. To reach this spot, simply depart from Banff and travel along Mt. Norquay Road until just before reaching Highway 1, at which point a left turn onto Vermilion Lakes Drive will lead you to a small float and a sign marking Third Vermilion Lake. Positioned just beyond the sign and float, lukewarm water flows from beneath the road on the north (highway) side.

The water trickles along the road for a short distance before eventually emptying into the lake through a culvert. Characterized by its tasteless quality and mild sulphuric scent, the water maintains a temperature of nearly 20°C (68°F) and is home to a variety of algae, including white, green, and brown varieties. While the springs themselves are a noteworthy sight, visitors will undoubtedly appreciate the stunning view of Mt. Rundle and Sulphur Mountain that can be enjoyed from this location.
