Wildmint Hotsprings
Wildmint Hotsprings
Hot Spring
Three large, richly vegetated pools near Seaplane Lake and Flat River in the Northwest Territories.
If you can brave the approach by floatplane to Seaplane Lake and the kayak or helicopter trip that follows, Wildmint Hotsprings awaits on the south bank of a creek running west towards the Flat River and about 2km (1 mile) upstream, 11.3km (7 miles) east-northeast of Seaplane Lake within the Flat River (95E) map area, approximately 61°35'W.
Here you will discover three large pools supporting a rich system of vegetation, most notably algae and wild mint. Each pool of odourless, colourless water features a low dissolved mineral content largely composed of calcium and bicarbonate, dammed by curved walls of tufa. The coolest and smallest of the three pools is also the lowest, while the middle pool boasts the largest dimensions at 15 to 40m (50 to 130ft.) wide by (175m or 575ft.) long with a depth of 2m (6ft.) Finally, the uppermost pool runs the hottest, with gas bubbles emerging from the bottom and a temperature of around 29°C (or 84°F) filling its 3m (10ft.) depth and 75m (250ft.) length.
